Five Uncomplicated Ways to Green Your Holiday Party

Holiday parties are a perfect chance to unwind and connect with coworkers, friends and family; unfortunately many events and parties leave a carbon footprint larger than necessary. If it’s your responsibility to plan a company party, or even just a small get together for those closest to you, here are a few effortless ways to help reduce the footprint of your event (without taking away from the fun or elegance):

1. Buy décor that can be reused for a number of years - Although you might want a different color scheme for your party next year, think about the cost of shipping ornaments made overseas to here, is it worth it? Another alternative would be to try and swap décor with someone else online.
2. Take transit, walk or carpool to parties (and suggest others do the same) – Not only will you save money on gas, but you will also reduce the emissions produced this holiday season. Another benefit is reducing the rick of guests drinking and driving.
3. Buy local beer and wine - Ontario is home to a wide variety of internationally renowned breweries and wineries and by buying locally you are cutting down on the carbon footprint created by shipping in products from overseas.
4. Ask your caterer to design a menu with seasonal and local foods, and at the end of the event donate extras to shelters – Like the previous point, by buying locally your caterers are helping reduce the distance your food will have to travel (smaller footprint). Also, share some of the fabulous food you have with others; for years I’ve been able to donate extra food from events to the YMCA youth shelter up the street (they are always so appreciative).
5. Instead of giving gifts to employees, clients or guests, donate to a charity of the company’s choice or participate in The Daily Bread Food Bank’s food drive. – I’ve gotten so many useless and impersonal knickknacks as secret Santa gifts in my lifetime I could’ve stocked my own store, but this year instead of spending money on a trinket you know will be instantly re-gifted (or even worse, just trashed) give something back to the community.

By committing to celebrate responsibly you will make a large (and positive) impact this season, and hopefully your actions will influence others to as well. The more we think about our actions today, the better the holidays could be for the future generations.
